Curriculum

Discovery School's curriculum is based on the developmentally appropriate practice which sees learning from a constructivist's perspective in an anti-bias context. In other words, children learn through "hands on" experiences in a classroom in which diversity is valued. A method of implementing the curriculum is through the "project approach," an adaptation of Reggio-Emilia.

A typical day for your child would include opportunities to learn in each of these curriculum areas:

CREATIVE ARTS

Painting, drawing, modeling, collage and other visual art materials, music, dance, dramatic play.

MESSY PLAY

Experimentation with sand, water, flour, finger paint, mud, snow, and other materials.

Children are introduced to computer skills as every classroom has a computer which we received through a technology grant.

FINE MOTOR

Small muscle development through the use of drawing tools, scissors, construction-type materials and visual perception training activities.

GROSS MOTOR

Large muscle development through the use of workbench, climbers, balance beams, blocks, balls, and obstacle courses, indoors, and outdoors.

SOCIO-EMOTIONAL

Development of positive self-concepts and realistic awareness of responsibility to others, through individual, small group, and large group experience.
